Exercising at 50 : A New Mindset

I’ve had gym memberships for the last 30+ years. I’ve done CrossFit, boxing classes, spin classes, rowing workouts, weight training. I’ve done everything that a gym has had to offer. Problem was that I got bored quickly. I didn’t have a routine that I enjoyed. I couldn’t stay consistent.

But like each time before I tried the gym again. This time I held myself to a “just show up and see what happens” attitude. No pressure. Fast forward 3 months later and I’m still at it averaging 5 days a week. Whats the difference? I found MY sweet spot.

What’s my sweet spot? I found it when I stopped letting the latest gems of why certain workouts were a waste of time deter me from what was working for me (my extra 2 cents…whats wrong to do now will be the right way to do things 3 years from now anyways and then switch back again). I found it on a treadmill! Easy to do. Been walking my whole life. My sweet spot is that moment where sweat and energy meet mental clarity and satisfaction. Thats when I realized my “why”! My “why” had changed from wanting to physically look good to now wanting to feel good mentally and emotionally. Now going to the gym is a “want to do” instead of a “need to do”.

So that’s why I love the treadmill. And in a crowded gym I can always find at least one treadmill to hop on. I hope you find your “treadmill”.
